IP69 vs. IP69K
Introduction of IP69K
The IP69K rating was originally developed in Germany for DIN 40050 Part 9, a standard used in the automotive industry to address the need for robust protection against high-pressure and high-temperature cleaning methods. This was crucial for vehicles like trucks and construction machinery, which are regularly subjected to harsh cleaning processes.
Over time, industries beyond automotive—such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing—adopted the IP69K standard due to their similar requirements for high hygiene and resistance to harsh environments.
While the IP69K designation originated in the DIN 40050 standard, it was later incorporated into the IEC 60529 standard (which originated in 1976, prior to the IP69K creation). This allowed for broader international recognition and usage, especially as industries demanded consistent criteria for equipment durability.
Difference between IP69 and IP69K
The difference between IP69 and IP69K lies in the testing standards and intended applications, particularly in terms of high-pressure, high-temperature water resistance. In any case, both are very high levels of protection in the Ingress Protection (IP) rating system, where the IP69 follows a slightly different test procedure.
